Each day Americans wake up to hear new revelations of government incompetence that enabled the Parkland, Florida school shooting. First it was the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s failure to follow existing protocols to investigate a highly detailed tip that the shooter was planning and had the means to do exactly what he did. The FBI and local police received at least four separate tips warning of the shooters’ plans and means, and local police had received 45 calls summoning them to the family’s home since 2008.
Then we learned of the police officer — the only person initially onsite able to return the shooter’s deadly force and tasked by his salary-paying community with doing precisely that — hesitated for approximately four minutes to enter the high school as students lay dying. Then local sources told reporters three other Broward County police officers joined that onsite officer in hiding behind their vehicles until police from another jurisdiction showed up. Reports say the Broward County police didn’t even follow the others inside.

The Turkish president has appeared in a bizarre video in which he assures a sobbing child in military uniform that she would get state honours if killed while fighting. Recep Tayyip Erdogan was heard commenting: ‘If she’s martyred, they’ll lay a flag on her,’ at a televised congress of his AK party. He made the comment – on live television – in front of cheering supporters who urged him to carry on with the military offensive against Kurdish fighters in Syria’s northern Afrin region.

“The country is left with an individual mandate to buy health insurance that lacks any constitutional basis,” the states said in their lawsuit. “Once the heart of the ACA — the individual mandate — is declared unconstitutional, the remainder of the ACA must also fall.”The lawsuit says Congress deemed the mandate to be “essential” to the law, since healthier people would be goaded into the market to balance out sick people who could no longer be denied or charged higher premiums.“Absent the individual mandate, the ACA is an irrational regulatory regime governing an essential market,” according to the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. The AGs are suing the Trump administration, a politically ally that loathes the law, but it could put Mr. Trump’s Justice Department in an awkward position. The administration had pushed to have a suitable replacement on hand before gutting the law, but it’s efforts failed last year. Nearly 12 million people recently selected coverage up on its linchpin exchanges, and millions more gained coverage through its expansion of Medicaid in dozens of states.“[Attorney General] Jeff Sessions is in a tough spot. I can’t see him filing a brief arguing that Obamacare’s mandate is constitutional!” Josh Blackman, a professor at South Texas College of Law, said in an email. “They will likely argue that the states lack standing, or other jurisdictional points.”

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Colton Haab said he was approached by CNN to ask a question at Wednesday night’s town hall but decided not to after the network gave him a “scripted question,” quashing one he wrote himself. Haab, a member of the Junior ROTC shielded students while the school was under attack from the shooter, said he was going to ask about using veterans as armed security guards.

“Ruggiero admitted that he did not recuse himself from the cooperative agreement, despite having had several reminders and opportunities to do so throughout the agreement’s period of performance,” the inspector general said in a report. “He admitted he knew it was wrong to have approved the funding modification and to have engaged in communications about the agreement. He said he did not intend to violate any rules or improperly benefit himself or his family member from their involvement. Ruggiero said it was a mistake that he did not recuse himself and that it was his responsibility to consult with the ethics office directly, regardless of his senior employee’s assurances.”

Russian police are investigating whether three school attacks this week are connected after a teenager attacked a class with an axe and Molotov cocktail in the Buryatia region.
Five seventh-graders and their teacher were wounded on Friday when a ninth-grader in Buryatia’s capital Ulan-Ude, near Lake Baikal in Siberia, attacked them and burned the classroom, according to the investigative committee. One student was in critical condition.
The young man was detained and hospitalised after he tried to commit suicide, it said.
The instructor involved, Russian language and literature teacher Irina Ramenskaya, told Mash, a popular news channel on the Telegram messenger app, that she had been holding a class when suddenly the door opened and an object was thrown into the room. She was struck in the head, she said, and the room began to fill with smoke.

“Most of the coverage of Russian meddling involves their attempt to effect the outcome of the 2016 US election. I have seen all of the Russian ads and I can say very definitively that swaying the election was *NOT* the main goal,” Goldman said.“The majority of the Russian ad spend happened AFTER the election. We shared that fact, but very few outlets have covered it because it doesn’t align with the main media narrative of Tump and the election,” he continued.“The main goal of the Russian propaganda and misinformation effort is to divide America by using our institutions, like free speech and social media, against us. It has stoked fear and hatred amongst Americans. It is working incredibly well. We are quite divided as a nation.”
